Grateful Greyhounds is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in July 1998. Our mission is to find loving, permanent homes for ex-racing greyhounds, Spanish galgos, Spanish podencos, and any hound in need that we believe we can help.
Here in the United States, we work primarily to place retired racing greyhounds into adoptive homes, guiding them as they transition from the track to life as cherished companions.
In 2011, we expanded our efforts internationally to include Spanish galgos and podencos—two breeds often subjected to extreme neglect and cruelty. The Spanish galgo is a close cousin to the American greyhound and shares many of the same gentle, loving qualities. The Spanish podenco, a fun and energetic breed, is similar to the Ibizan Hound found here in the U.S.
At Grateful Greyhounds, we see no borders in rescue. We help the dogs who need us, wherever they may be. With decades of hands-on experience, our adopters benefit from the knowledge, guidance, and lifelong support we proudly offer. We are passionate about the work we do and deeply committed to every hound we help and every family we support.
Grateful Greyhounds has a long-standing, excellent history of helping ex-racing greyhounds find adoptive homes. In addition to helping the greyhounds, we also noticed that Spanish Galgos, Spanish Podencos, and other hounds in Spain were struggling to find homes and were being treated poorly. Once we saw what was happening, we had to help. So GG, in addition to helping the ex-racing greyhounds, also helps these deserving Spaniards find forever homes. In Spain. Galgos and podencos are used for hunting and are sight hounds similar to our ex-racers. Unfortunately, once they are no longer useful to the hunter (the Galguero), they are euthanized in some of the most inhumane and horrible ways. Grateful Greyhounds knows it cannot save every dog or offer every dog a forever home. But we think about the dogs that we can help and, one by one, we help improve their lives. Seeing the hounds that Grateful Greyhounds has touched find wonderful families that cherish them is what motivates us year after year.
